Express Septic Tank Pumping
Septic System Maintenance Guide

How Often to Pump Your Septic Tank
Most homes should pump every 3 to 5 years. The right interval depends on household size, tank size and water use. Larger families or smaller tanks need pumping more often. See septic tank pumping.
What Not to Flush or Pour Down Drains
- Wipes (including 'flushable' wipes), paper towels, diapers and feminine products
- Cooking grease, fats and oils
- Coffee grounds and large amounts of food scraps
- Paint, solvents, harsh chemicals and medications
- Excessive bleach or antibacterial cleaners that kill helpful bacteria
Water Use Tips
- Fix leaky toilets and faucets quickly
- Spread laundry loads through the week
- Use high-efficiency fixtures and appliances
- Send roof gutters and runoff away from the drain field
Drain Field Care
- Don't park or drive vehicles on the drain field
- Don't plant trees or large shrubs nearby; roots can damage pipes. Grass is best
- Don't build structures or pave over it
Warning Signs of Problems
Slow drains, gurgling pipes, sewage odors, soggy or extra-green grass over the drain field, and backups in toilets or drains. Call right away if you notice these.
Why Regular Inspections Help
An inspection can catch problems early, before they turn into costly repairs, and gives you a record of your system's condition. Learn about septic inspections.
